Enthusiasm!

A series of radio programmes curated by Sarah Pierce and Grant Watson, broadcast from the Resonance 104.4fm radio booth at the Frieze Art Fair, London, 11am - 12pm daily. The curators worked with the diverse possibilities of radio, so that discussions are interspersed with related sound elements, such as performances, music, readings and audio works by artists.

Enthusiasm! opens with artist Susan Philipsz singing the Internationale, live from the Resonance 104.4fm booth at the Frieze Art Fair; followed by a special feature on the composer Cornelius Cardew and the Scratch Orchestra, including commentary and a roundtable discussion with guests Adrian Rifkin, Rob Stone, Anjalika Sagar, Kodwo Eshun, and Barbara Ellison, plus excerpts from several of Cardew's compositions such as Croppy Boy and The Great Learning. Artist Eoghan McTigue presents recordings from Berlin - an audio narrative in three chapters entitled Architecture, Assembly and Dissent; Charity Scribner and Kerstin Mey discuss Scribner's examination of the politics of memory, and the legacy of European worker's movements in literature and art, in her recent book Requiem for Communism; in a broadcast commissioned specially for Enthusiasm!, all the way from Japan, multi-media producer Terre Thaemlitz performs live from the Resonance 104.4fm booth. Thaemlitz's work combines issues of gender and identity with an ongoing Marxist inspired critique of media production. This diverse politics is matched by the artist's wide range of musical styles, which include electro-acoustic, digital jazz, and computer generated neo-expressionist piano solos. A short paper on communism in film presented by artist Hito Steyerl with audio samples from various titles including, Man with a Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov) Yojimbo(Akira Kurosawa) and Tito for the Second Time Among the Serbs (Zelimir Zilnik); live readings from the Martha Rosler Library(a project organised by e-flux) broadcast from the Resonance 104.4fm booth at the Frieze Art Fair, with texts selected and read by Karl Holmqvist, Annie Fletcher, Alberto Toscano, Vaari Claffey, Enrico David, Paul O'Neill, Jean Matthee and Dieter Roelstraete. Sunday 15 October 11:00 - 12:00

A presentation of recent sound releases by the audio activists Ultra-red, including tracks from ¡Amnistia! - composed entirely from recordings made on May Day 2000at demonstrations for immigrant rights in New York City, and Imperial Beach - composed from site recordings made during street protests at the Summit of the Americas, Quebec City, Canada. With commentary from Ben Borthwick and Sarah Pierce; Belfast's Richard West and Stephen Hackett present the Factotum choir - an amatuer group, who perform both communist and corporate songs; artist Declan Clarke is in the booth presenting Sadness & Nostalgia excerpts from conversations about communism with family and friends; Shezad Dawood's Reclaiming the Fair runs live throughout today's programme;Enthusiasm! concludes with a live broadcast by artist Garrett Phelan.
